Standard Entrance Examinations
Each standardized test has it own bulletin, a brochure that explains
everything you need to know about the test, how much it costs, where
you can take it, when you can take it, etc. You can find these test
bulletins in your local U.S. Overseas Educational Advising Office or
you can request one from the organizing test service. Each bulletin
contains test registrations forms. In order to fill these out, you
must know where you want to take the test (the bulletin contains test
centers worldwide), when you want to take the test (each may be given
only a few times a year), which test you want to take (see below),
which schools you want to receive your "official scores," (the schools
you are applying to) and how you can pay for the cost of the test
(personal check drawn on a U.S. bank, credit card, money order, etc.).
After sending in the registration form, you should receive an admissions ticket
shortly afterwards in the mail confirming your registration. When you go to the
test, you should bring your admissions ticket, two identification cards (at least
one with a photo), your "Photo File Records" (these two forms come with your admissions
ticket), and several pencils with erasers.

English Proficiency Tests
The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is the most common
English proficiency exam and is a two-hour test consisting of three
sections: listening comprehension, structure, and vocabulary and reading
comprehension. Listening comprehension scoring ranges from 24 to 68,
structure and written expression from 20 to 68, and reading comprehension
from 21 to 67. To compute your composite score, average your three
scores and multiply by 10 (composite scores range from 200 to 677
points). Top undergraduate and graduate schools look for scores of
at least 550 and 600, respectively. For more information
about the TOEFL, including
centers and dates in your home country and the US, write or call the
